Let me ask you something real quick. What if every dollar you’re already spending in your business could quietly stack up into first class flights, overwater villas, and bucket list family trips, without spending a dime of after tax money? Yeah, that hit me the same way.
I just sat down with Eli Facenda on The Happy Hustle Podcast, and I’ll be honest, this conversation had me rethinking everything about how I use my credit cards. Eli is the founder of Freedom Travel Systems and is known online as “The Travel Guy.” He’s helped over 1,000 entrepreneurs turn their normal, everyday business expenses into 50K plus dream trips and first-class experiences for less than economy prices. All by maximizing credit card points. The dude booked a $6,000 business class flight for $6. Six dollars. That’s not a typo. And that one moment sent him down a path that became his life’s work.
What I love about Eli is that he’s not just some points nerd (though he proudly is one). He’s all about experiential wealth, which is the idea that money makes you rich, but experiences make you wealthy. That philosophy is so aligned with what we talk about here at The Happy Hustle, where we’re always chasing creative, time, and financial freedom. Eli lives it. He’s traveled the world, built a business around helping others do the same, and he genuinely believes that your best memories shouldn’t come at the cost of your business growth. They should come because of it.
One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is what Eli calls the three buckets of the points game. First, you want to maximize the type and quantity of points you earn. Not all points are created equal. A Delta point, a Hilton point, and an Amex point are completely different currencies, and most people don’t realize that. Eli broke down why flexible transferable bank points from Amex, Chase, or Capital One are almost always more valuable than airline or hotel co-branded cards. He even dropped a gem about how you can put payroll, rent, and supplier payments on a credit card using third party tools, earning massive points on expenses you never thought could count. Second, you want to optimize your upgrades, so your travel experience is seamless, with lounge access, free bags, suite upgrades, and all the perks that come from using your cards well. Third, you want to maximize the value of your points when you actually book your dream trips, because most people are only getting 10 to 20 percent of the value they should be getting from their points.
Eli also shared something he calls the Freedom Flywheel, and honestly, this concept alone is worth hitting play for. The idea is simple but powerful. As your business grows, it spends more money. More spending with the right cards means more points. More points mean more tax-free vacations for you and your family. And when those trips are funded by your business expenses, there’s zero guilt, which means you come back recharged, your relationships get stronger, and you’re more motivated to grow the business even further. It’s a positive loop that just keeps spinning. He even pointed out that the points you earn from business cards are coded as a rebate, meaning they’re tax free even when earned from business expenses. So instead of pulling 50K out of your company for a family trip to Europe and paying another 12K in taxes on top of that, you use points and reinvest that money back into growth.
We also got into what Eli calls the Five P’s Framework of Peak Moments, which is his recipe for turning any trip from “yeah, it was nice” into a core memory that lasts forever. It starts with People, meaning who you want to share the experience with. Then Place, somewhere that’s been on your bucket list or theirs. Then Purpose, which is the deeper meaning behind the trip. He shared how he and his wife eloped in the Swiss mountains at a venue that was deeply special to them, and how he surprised her with a trip to Paris that connected to her grandmother’s lifelong love of the city. Then there’s Possibility, which is about leaving room for spontaneity and magic. And finally, Presence, actually being there mentally and emotionally, not halfway on Slack. When you stack all five of those together, you don’t just take a vacation. You create something unforgettable.
For the practical minded folks out there, Eli also covered the common landmines to avoid. Your credit score won’t tank if you play it smart, because business cards don’t show up on your personal credit report. You don’t need 30 cards, just two to five of the right ones. And when it comes to booking with points, flexibility of even just two to three days on your travel dates and being open to flying out of a nearby major hub can be the difference between burning five million points and using 800,000 for the same trip. He also dropped a list of tools for searching award availability, including point.me, seats.arrow, Roam Travel, and others.
And if you want to dream even bigger, Eli painted a picture of what’s possible. Emirates first class with an in flight shower. Singapore Suites with a double bed at 35,000 feet. A five star castle in Scotland booked entirely on Hyatt points. Overwater villas in the Maldives and Bora Bora. African safaris on Marriott points. This isn’t fantasy. This is what happens when you play the points game well.
Eli is offering two free playbooks exclusively for the Happy Hustle community: the CEO Points Playbook and the Payroll on a Credit Card Playbook. You can grab both at freedomtravelsystems.com/happyhustle. And if you want the done for you version, his concierge team redeemed over 150 million points last year at an average of 4.7 cents per point, nearly five times what the banks give you.
This episode is packed with real, actionable value that can literally change how you live your life. If you’re an entrepreneur spending money every month anyway (and you are), you owe it to yourself to hear this one.
